35. 69th Regiment Punch

#35 69th Regiment Punch - Hero

There are of course many different 69th Regiments in various military units, but the one that makes the most sense is the “Fighting Irish” from New York. Since this cocktail is similar to some of the other toddy-esque ones we’ve done in the past, but with an addition of Irish spirit, it connects up with the infantry unit? I guess?

This past weekend was the 69th Herring Festival in Jamesville, North Carolina. I was going to put some actual news in this one but then, herring festival. So there you go.

150. Brandy Flip

150. Brandy Flip - Hero

Oddly, this has nothing to do with the other flips that we’ve done so far, which generally use egg whites, as I understand it. Which I thought when I chose this one for today, still in the depths of winter. Oh well. This, instead, has a different, singular feature, which is the worst.

The “Search for MH370” switch has now been flipped from on to off, three years after the Malaysian Airlines plane went missing. The officials in charge decided early on that if the wreckage was not found after 120,000 square km were searched (Wolfram Alpha tells me this is a third of the size of Germany) that they’d have to call it off. And, they’ve hit that limit. One day, we’ll be able to magically map all the oceans and be able to find it, but until then, it will remain a mystery. I for one, though, didn’t realize how much wreckage (primarily in Africa) we had actually found of the plane, so we actually knew a bit more than I thought.

132. Apple Toddy

132. Apple Toddy - Hero

First off, baked apples are good on their own. So, when this recipe called for dunking one into alcohol, I expected it to be delicious. Correctly. I used the Joy of Cooking recipe for a baked apple. Because the Joy of Cooking is my everything.

In the latest Apple news, the company has branched out from computers and technology into the new field of books about computers and technology. Namely, themselves. Super nice photography in here, but I feel like the price tag is pretty unjustified. Sort of how I feel about their new products, too, but that’s another blog. It is pretty though.

8. Scotch Whiskey Punch

8. Scotch Whiskey Punch - Hero

Sometimes, Jerry Thomas is kind of a douche. This is one of those times. You’ll see why in the description for this drink, of which there are minimal details. Of course, he then turns around and gives specific details in the very next recipe, so he really waffles a bit. I used the rough proportions from the next drink (out tomorrow) to make this one.

Not a huge amount of related news, but in an effort to be informative, a few stories about Latin America. Donald Trump met with the Mexican president, in a meeting I wish I had been there to see. Meanwhile, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil was (finally) impeached. It’s a one-two punch of leadership stories!
