This number is actually two drinks, but I only know what one of the variations actually means. As a result, this is only the London version. To that end, please let me know if you have a sense of the difference between “new” and “old” ale, and then I can do the American one.
In honor of National Puppy Day (puppies go “arf,” right?) on Friday, here is an example of the fine, hard-hitting journalism we all expect from The Guardian.
Sometimes, mixology is hard. Other times… not so much. Jerry has a number of “cocktails” that are very easy to make. Such as this one.
As for news, here is a mix of two things I hate and it makes me very sad but I guess you might be interested in this.
I guess it’s just because these are the first cocktails, really, but they seem (to me) to hardly count as cocktails. Oh well. You do you, Jerry, you do you.
So news is also really tough for drinks that are only named after the ingredients they have in them… Here’s something about someone getting murdered over a bottle of brandy. In Namibia, apparently.
Come on, these are just getting ridiculous. Ice should not be an ingredient. Unless you blend it, in which case I give it a pass.
However, on the bright side, this one is easy to news. Because sports on ice are fun to watch at the Olympics. Unfortunately, it has not been going so well for Team USA’s figure skaters… I don’t usually watch that much skating but have a fair amount this year; it seems like people are falling a lot more than I would expect. Is this normal? OR IS IT A KOREAN PLOT?!?!?!? Let me know.
Next on the list of lame two-ingredient cocktails (at least they’re easy to make!), one of my favorite ingredients! Let’s see if it rescues the drink.

Surrounding this holiday, I saw a lot of different lists of cool black cocktails, so I made my own. Turns out activated charcoal is surprisingly expensive, but I think this came out pretty great, so it was worth it.
Also, if you haven’t seen Stranger Things, the source of this drink’s name, you should do it! Our friends had a Stranger Things themed Halloween party this weekend and it was great.

Well, this drink finally puts to rest the question of whether or not you can have too much of a good thing. The answer is, undoubtedly, yes. A disappointing answer, but the answer nonetheless. I’ll have to think up a new favorite alcohol. Sorry, Angostura.
This one’s a bit of a stretch, but bear with me. We’ve had too many articles about Brandy, so I tried Champerelle. Nothing. But, “champerelle” sounds like “champignon” which is French for “mushroom.” BOOM. (Sorry. I’ll do better next time.)
Another variation on the Old Fashioned theme, this one a little more out there than the others. Why? Well, it’s exactly the same but with champagne instead of a hard liquor. So it adds bubbles and sweetness, among other things. A very different experience.
Apparently this year’s Champagne harvest was very bad, so we could see increased prices and limited supply in the coming years! Horror of horrors! Luckily, the wineries tend to have a big reserve, so it shouldn’t hopefully have a gigantic impact. But we’ll see…
The less annoying follow up to 8. Scotch Whiskey Punch. Since it’s pretty much the same thing, I’m forgoing the news element – nothing super new since yesterday.
Sometimes, Jerry Thomas is kind of a douche. This is one of those times. You’ll see why in the description for this drink, of which there are minimal details. Of course, he then turns around and gives specific details in the very next recipe, so he really waffles a bit. I used the rough proportions from the next drink (out tomorrow) to make this one.
Not a huge amount of related news, but in an effort to be informative, a few stories about Latin America. Donald Trump met with the Mexican president, in a meeting I wish I had been there to see. Meanwhile, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil was (finally) impeached. It’s a one-two punch of leadership stories!
