130. Porter Sangaree

130. Porter Sangaree - Hero

This is an alternate version of one we’ve already tested, the Ale Sangaree. This one is better.

Hopefully, the most important thing that will happen today in the news is the Super Bowl, this afternoon between the Patriots and the Falcons. Being from New England, my choice here is clear, and so I will be a porter of Pats spirit even here in LA — or let’s face it, most places — where people kind of hate them. At press time, the odds are 61% in favor of the Pats (according to FiveThirtyEight) so I’m okay with that. Have fun watching!

150. Brandy Flip

150. Brandy Flip - Hero

Oddly, this has nothing to do with the other flips that we’ve done so far, which generally use egg whites, as I understand it. Which I thought when I chose this one for today, still in the depths of winter. Oh well. This, instead, has a different, singular feature, which is the worst.

The “Search for MH370” switch has now been flipped from on to off, three years after the Malaysian Airlines plane went missing. The officials in charge decided early on that if the wreckage was not found after 120,000 square km were searched (Wolfram Alpha tells me this is a third of the size of Germany) that they’d have to call it off. And, they’ve hit that limit. One day, we’ll be able to magically map all the oceans and be able to find it, but until then, it will remain a mystery. I for one, though, didn’t realize how much wreckage (primarily in Africa) we had actually found of the plane, so we actually knew a bit more than I thought.

86. Sherry Egg Nogg

86. Sherry Egg Nogg - Hero

My dorm in college used to have Sherry Hour every week, or maybe every month… I forget which. Anyways, I was never really a fan, but I had this bottle on hand so this drink worked out fairly well. It also is a little closer to what I think of as actual eggnog, at least compared to the others so far.

All of my interactions with Beefeaters have been very friendly. Granted, I think I only had one, as a tour guide at the Tower of London, but still. Apparently, they drink sherry! Also whiskey. However, I am confused as to why they do not drink gin. You’d think that would be a thing… Otherwise what is Beefeater gin? This is all barely news. I apologize.

148. Egg Flip

148. Egg Flip - Hero

Well, it’s December. And in the spirit of the holidays, I’m dedicating this entire month to the most festive of festive drinks: eggnog! Sure, most people (that I know, anyway) don’t like eggnog, or had a bad experience with it at the office Christmas party, but hey, Jerry Thomas has way too many recipes for it (in fact, more than I could fit in this month), so when else am I going to do it? This first one technically isn’t eggnog, but it has eggs in it and is pretty similar to the other recipes, so I’m including it.

Here’s my egg-related news — this article about the effects of two recent ballot measures on egg producers. I don’t actually agree with the position; I think they’re not really telling the truth, but it’s an article nonetheless. Clearly an odd publication, though — “Free Minds and Free Markets” is their tagline.

132. Apple Toddy

132. Apple Toddy - Hero

First off, baked apples are good on their own. So, when this recipe called for dunking one into alcohol, I expected it to be delicious. Correctly. I used the Joy of Cooking recipe for a baked apple. Because the Joy of Cooking is my everything.

In the latest Apple news, the company has branched out from computers and technology into the new field of books about computers and technology. Namely, themselves. Super nice photography in here, but I feel like the price tag is pretty unjustified. Sort of how I feel about their new products, too, but that’s another blog. It is pretty though.
